Really? Wow. I would love this over a property tax. A consumption tax would be even more ideal.
Ha! Yeah, well we also have property tax AND sales tax in addition to this income tax. And vehicle registrations are several hundred dollars a year if you have anything made this millennium. They take too many cues from Illinois here.
I'm volunteering this year with AARP for their free tax filing service for lower income/elderly folks. I don't know enough to actually do the taxes, but I bring the people in, get their forms together and package it for the preparers. I'd definitely endorse going to a simpler pay X% and be done with all the nonsense.
I'm not a fan of AARP politics, but this is a good thing if you know of any older folks that could use help with filing taxes. No cost, and there's not any actual numbers attached to the 'low' income or age criteria.
Take their teeth, too. Say you'll just hold onto them for a bit. But then they forget and wander off. POWER!

KS hits married filing jointly with 5.7% once you break 60K. And we're blessed with property and sales taxes. Groceries get taxed at full tilt too unless our desperate Guv pushes through a cut to get re-elected.
We file married separately in Iowa. It's usually a couple thousand bucks difference.

Why are you stealing from the government?
