I don't know if this counts as firearms

Ground squirrels.  These little fuckers.

For a few years I had a little BB pistol that was at the higher end of muzzle speed... like 500fps IIRC... that would typically do the trick to take these things out if I hit them inside of 30-40 feet.  Though admittedly sometimes it just stunned them and they'd give me a pissed off look.  That broke last year, and the ground squirrels are back... what's a good solution that won't draw complaints from the neighbors?  Pellets?  Rifle of some sort?  An actual low-key firearm?

I figure that whatever I get, the 11 year old showed a decent bit of judgement with the BB pistol in the past few years, so I'd probably let him have it as well.

They've got some pellet rifles out there that are downright scary. Get a .22 pellet gun and massacre those fucking tree rats. Just be mindful of your backdrop. This bad boy can get up to 1640 fps with the .177 pellets and 1300 fps with .22.

Def want a 22 cal pellet rifle. I'd stay away from the break barrel ones though. The sights aren't mounted on the barrel, and every time you break it to cock and load...you're relying on it snapping back into the exact same spot for your sights. Never happens. I had a 177 one and hate it because I can't consistently hit inside of a 2" circle at more than 50ft.

I get your point on the break-barrel thing, but it seems like that's more an issue of machining tolerances and slop in the hinges, etc. I'm a total amateur, and don't expect to be taking the nuts off these things at a hundred yards, so I pulled the trigger on the one BBM posted.

Got this sighted in over the weekend while the BIL was here.  I can see it being entertaining for more than varmint control.  It's a loud little fella!

LoL @ the butthole-stock.

Still, nice plinker.

I don't kill the tree rats any more because my hound spends hours chasing them in the back pasture.

May grab one of those, so damn many of those at a few of my hunting stands that a little thinning of the herd wouldn't hurt.
