When we were talking to academic advisors about scholarships, probably because the wife worked for the school, she was pretty honest about her chances. She was white, with both parents alive so so she was out of the running for about half. Since she didn't have a tragic story about her life she wouldn't have that to write abowhich would hurt her chances as well.
She was able to find a few small ones that were mainly one year but it helped.
Like others said remind her 80% of the guys on campus are ass holes who can't be trusted, don't leave your drink or take one. The other 20% are gay.
See if the schools do student only visits, let's face it the parent kid tours are a sales pitch to mom and dad, a visit where they spend time with students even if it is half a day let's them see what student life is like. That's what convinced our daughter that the school was right for her.
