What's Lou been up to, you ask?
Man, life really got away from me. I interviewed for my dream job in May, and after the exec search completed in June, I got an official offer right before the July 4th holiday. I accepted, told my whole family I was changing careers, and had a start date. Then I took my final work trip with some folks, and had some deep heart to heart talks about the importance of what we do. There are things happening in the world right now, and things that are going to happen, maybe slightly less likely after this week's election outcome, but still possible and significant nonetheless. And I'm in a position to meaningfully help with those things. After agonizing soul searching, I decided to stay on my current path and let the door close on what I thought was what I'd always wanted. Instead, I tortured myself to go participate in training with Marines for two weeks in Hawaii, feeling near death for much of it, but never so alive. After returning, I wanted to capture that momentum, so i was determined to start running. I hadn't run since 8th grade track, and was not really made for it. I was begging for breath after a few hundred feet at first. I was constantly injuring knees, ankles, and getting bad cramps. At one point I ended up powering through one with several aspirin, and found myself peeing blood for two days as a result. I've managed to keep going. Today I finished a week of waking up at 5am and getting a 5k in every day, through rain, fog, and freezing, and I'm down under 200 pounds for the first time since I was a freshman in college. I'm better than I used to be, unambiguously. I even managed to squeeze in a light show, albeit shorter than in past years. I hope to edit and post that video soon.
Anyway, major changes in my priorities since summer, and I sort of let the link to this place fall to the bottom. I'm more ready for the fight that's coming, and one that I hope to help my son's generation win or not have to fight at all. I miss busting you guys' balls.
