Olympics 2021
#1
Not seeing a Olympics thread on search.  Here's a little something being discussed on the internet today.

"Simone Biles pulled out of the women’s gymnastics team final at the Olympics Tuesday after a rough performance on the vault. Without its star, the US team landed the silver medal, coming in behind Russia and breaking its 11-year winning streak in world competitions.

Afterward, Biles addressed the media in tears, explaining that she’d withdrawn for mental health reasons. “Whenever you get in a high-stress situation you kind of freak out,” she said. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and wellbeing.”

Being an Olympic athlete is stressful, doing so in the way Japan is handling it only makes it 10x worse, doing all of that under the media spotlight she is under I couldn't imagine.

Since Nationalism and supporting your country is frowned upon, what's the point of the Games any longer?

I have difficulty not comparing Kerrie Strug to this situation. One is physical and the other is mental. I'm certain the media will paint the Biles situation as bravery. It does not approach what Strug did IMHO.

I cannot appreciate the stress, but if Tom Brady pulled something similar he would get ate alive. I am willing to discount the fact though that what that monster trainer did to these ladies is horrific and could be contributing?!

It’s generational. We don’t raise kids to persevere any more. That said, I assume this girl is still pretty young, and it’s undoubtedly a lot of pressure to deal with. The thing is, if her goal is just to “have fun,” then she should just forget about everyone watching, and just get out there and do it. The rest is just in her head.

I think her not sticking her landing on that first run shook her confidence and she couldn't handle it. Too ashamed she might fail. Sad, really. She is one hell of an athlete.

USA Wrestling is having their best collective performance ever, the young kid out of Minnesota Gable Dan Stephenson is a freaking beast. Watched his matches during the US qualifications and he dominated but the talk was he was young, it would be his first international competition at this level and he may struggle. Nope, didn't give up a single point till the gold medal match and he had one of the most exciting matches I have ever watched.
