Decided to stimulate the economy and buy an entry level rig. I want to try my hand at planetary observation and eventually move into deep sky.
Bought the Celestron NexStar 8SE SCT.

You can hook up a DSLR or a specially designed camera to take photos. I need to learn the night sky first before I start any imaging.

My inlaws bought a telescope one year. Like, hogs are interested in the cosmos, you know? Anyway, they set it up, maybe looked up at the sky and got confused about why it still looked black and let it collect dust ever since.
I should get them a shovel and be like, "You never know what's in the backyard ..."

Where's the best place to buy telescopes?! Where you gonna set that bad boy up Stank? I'm curious how one goes about choosing the optimal location??

There are apps that will lets you know where the darkest skies in your region, known as
Bortle Zones. I'm in about a 4.5 area unless I can find a park that will let me in after dark and drive for a bit. It should be good enough for what I'm doing know.
Looks into your local astronomy clubs or go to the cloudynights.com for research.
I don't know the best place to buy a scope. I settled for the one who actually had the scope I wanted in stock. Should arrive on Thursday. So we shall see.

Is this one of those that has a database and a clock input and can actually track things for you? How do you set north on it? I assume magnetic compass isn't good enough and it doesn't cost enough to have a gyro-compassing inertial. Does it scan the sky and estimate based on known objects, or do you have to sight in a specific star or something?

Basically you input your location and time. Then you can do a 2 or 3 bright star alignment on it and it will plate solve the pictures. After that you can use the database in it to look at over 44,000 celestial objects. I want to start with the moon and planets and work my way up to deeper space.

That sounds really cool. You mentioned darkness. Is darkness essential for the scope to work best?
